Lazy Saturday on the (plotbunny) farm

Doing some edits on past fics today. Mostly trying to work on my [livejournal.com profile] space_wrapped without getting distracted by WIP's or extraneous plotbunnies or prompt fills or the second season of Darker than Black. Damn my obsession with pretty men with other men and pretty women with other women and pretty animation.

So in the interest of not getting eaten by my plotbunnies, I am going to vent a few of them now:

Kirk/McCoy (AOS) – A mix of two requests over at [livejournal.com profile] buckleup_meme. One is that Jim and Bones adopt a teenager, the other is that Jim makes a deal with Pike who (somehow) helps Jim get custody of his kid in exchange for joining 'fleet. My bunny is that Jim is not 13/14 during the Tarsus genocide, but 17/18. Once he returns to Earth and recovers physically, he has to fight for custody of his only remaining cousin from Tarsus, who has no other relatives willing to take in him/her. Jim makes a deal with Pike that if Pike will help him with the custody (i.e. vouch for his character, etc.), Jim will join 'fleet once his cousin reaches a certain age (say 13 or so because Jim doesn't want to leave him/her alone during his/her more formative years). The result is that when Kirk joins 'fleet, he has a teenager in tow. I would love to see how having to raise an older child effected jim from ages 18-22 when he joins up, and how a teenaged dependent affects his relationship with Bones. Can you tell I love kid!fics?

Kirk/McCoy (AOS) - A very basic bunny. Isn't time travel like the best plot device ever? Jim and Bones are stuck in the 20th century. In fact, they are stuck there for so long that they begin the relationship they were unable to embark upon on the Enterprise (either because of regulations, because of fear of compromising their working relationship/frienship, etc.). Then they are rescued, and have to decide whether they will continue to be lovers, or whether they will go back to being "just friends." I'm sure you know which side I'm rooting for. Oh, the angst.

Kirk/McCoy (AOS) - A very very basic bunny. Jim and bones are stuck on a shuttle, drifting in space. Bones' worst nightmare. ("It's the fear of dying in something that flies!") Jim's not having the best day either. But neither of them can fault the company.

I'm looking forward to voting in the election on Tuesday. Hope all my fellow Americans are too. But first, the weekend!

just caught up with your most recent post. I myself think the second plot sounds the most appealing. It's the one where our boys are stuck in the 20th century and then must decide what kind of relationship they will have when they are rescued. Funny but the first one where kirk wants to adopt his cousin after surviving Tarsus, for me personally doesn't work. I feel that the whole Kirk package as a person was formed by his past and to change that would change him in someway. I guess I have a very defined way of thinking of things and feel that his interactions with Uhura would be different if he were showing a child how to act. I think what's going through my mind is the essential Kirk was all about getting people to under estimate him. The conclusions that he wanted others to draw about him wouldn't be possible because his behavior would be so altered with him having custody of a child.....yeah that's the whole point of such a story but I guess I'm much to inflexible when it comes to Jim that I can't accept this premise. THE PROBLEM IS MINE. YOU WRITE WHAT YOU WANT AND I KNOW IT WILL BE GOOD. IT'S YOUR IMAGINATION AND NO ONE SHOULD TELL YOU HOW TO USE IT.

Hey! Always good to hear from you.

I've always had a thing about wanting to see how Jim and Bones handle the 20th/21st century. There have been some great K/S fics on the subject, but I haven't seen one K/Mc except for modern day total AU's. I just changed my prompt fill over at [livejournal.com profile] space_wrapped to a K-and-Mc-stuck-in-modern-day-at-X-mas-fic (wow, that's a lot of hyphens) because I was having so much trouble with my other fill. Hope I can rise to the challenge.

I totally understand where you're coming from with your feelings on Kirk's character. There is a fine line one has to tread, and kid!fics aren't for everyone. The first bunny would definitely bring about some changes in Kirk's character (i.e less angry and more responsible), and affect movie canon as far as some of the events that happen. One runs the risk of taking away all the qualities that make Kirk so appealing. I think it's doable, but it would take a better writer than me to accomplish that feat.

And damnit I just thought of another bunny while I was typing this. I need to put a leash on my brain.

Good to hear from you too. You are right on with interpretation of what I was trying to say about Kirk and his characteristics essential to his being the Kirk we know and love. I think you are a fine writer but I could see where an attempt to write such a story could be a bit daunting. I love kid!fics myself but ones where Jim is the kid. I have an irrational dislike of kid!fics that deal with Carol Marcus/David. Don't know why but seriously dislike them.

I love your idea for our boys having a 20th century x-mas. When you say AU vs. total AU what do you mean by that. Is there a distinction in how much of the trek story/characters are used? I'm just curious is all.

I say the more bunnies the better...lol

I've always considered au's with no Enterprise/Starfleet to be "total AU's," but that's just my own thought process.

I agree with your assessment. Can you offer up any details about your x-mas au. maybe a little back story...I'm excited to have found you and your stories. I just read parts 5-8 of your most recent post. I find that your stories are quite interesting, they always leave me wanting more. You pick themes that really are quite fascinating and you seem to have a real knack for character development. Your inner muse seems to have really lead you in the right direction as you seem to hit the literary mark every time.

Wow! Thank you for the high praise.

The basic premise of my X-mas fic is that Jim and Bones get stuck on modern day Earth during the hoidays. The holiday aspect is that some of our 21st century traditions seem weird, wonderful (and sometimes disturbing) to them. I plan to combine that fill with my plotbunny of "K and Mc start a relationship in the past." I basically have this headcanon that Jim and Bones are smouldering with UST, and that UST finally gets released when they are out of their Starfleet roles and are convinced they will never see their own time again. I've just started it, so I don't have a while lot yet.

If you have any tips on how to get them sent into the past, I'm all ears. That's my biggest challenge right now. I'm thinking transporter accident, maybe? I'm not great at the techy side of trek fic.

[identity profile] hora-tio.livejournal.com 2012-11-04 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not great at the techy thing either, but you seem to think outside the box with a lot of your storylines so maybe something bizzare could happen to them. Many of the time travel/alternate reality stories seem to go with transporter incident, alien mind altering substances. Maybe it could be something like they are spending now x-mas together on shoreleave because have no where to go. Perhaps they have a funky drink which causes hallucinations or some bar patron alien over hears there holiday woes and decides to help them feel better by putting them in the alternate reality. Maybe father x-mas visits and decides to grant them their subconsious wish. Aw hell maybe some alien culture wants to test their character so they put them in this situation and want to see what they will do when returned to their own time. How about some aliens are using them as lab rats and pick the past time x-mas based on some other human interactions they may have had in the past. These aliens could want to see how humans have evolved since their last encounter with them back in the 20th century. hence the test to see what they will do once back in their own present x-mas time. just brainstorming sorry for the rambling

You call it rambling, I call it freakin' genius! So many ideas!

[identity profile] hora-tio.livejournal.com 2012-11-04 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
you're to kind. these brainstorms are one of nice benefits of the whole bi-polar thing. Anyways sometimes I think I would like to write my own story but I'm thinking I maybe more of a prompt person than a story creator. I have so many ideas that I wish I could write. My wish right now is to read a story where Pike is captain of the enterprise and Jim comes back from a mission transformed into an infant/small boy and immediately identifies Pike as Daddy. He attaches himself to Pikes hip and won't let any one else tend to him. Its like a 100 on the cute scale just imagining Pike giving Jim a bath or putting him to bed etc. So hint hint if you need a new prompt I'm your go to person

[identity profile] akainagi.livejournal.com 2012-11-04 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
I have a soft spot for Pike as a father figure. I've never seen it done literally in the J/B fandom, but there have been a few good ones in K/S.

[identity profile] hora-tio.livejournal.com 2012-11-04 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
I have a similar soft spot and yes I've seen it done with kidjim and either spock/bones have figured into the story. Any daddy pike stories seem to be where jim is actually still a child vs temporary transformation. I love my J/B but I really love my Pike/kirk in any formation
