My personal headcanon is of the opinion that Jim finally found a place where he felt he belonged on Tarsus, which made the massacre that followed all the more tragic (oh, Jim, how I enjoy torturing you so). And I've always loved the idea of Sato being a big part of that in a mentor-ish capacity. She would certainly have been the best person to teach him all about languages and cultures, including her own.
